(Review) Charlotte Bash – Journey To Me

charlotte bash

After reviewing Charlotte Bash’s powerful single “Liar”, we were thrilled to hear more from her new EP, “Journey To Me”. With honesty and love as her guiding lights, Charlotte Bash brings her listeners directly to her fragile core self on her new EP. Using a minimalist instrumental approach and a voice simultaneously thunderous and sweet, Charlotte renders her quiet epiphanies on life and love down smoothly into a diaphanous six-track tapestry of a soul on a mission to realize itself. “Journey To Me” is captivating and cool, each track offering a unique moment of access to the pains and triumphs that brought her here as well as the motivations that keep here striving toward newer heights.

The lyrics Charlotte Bash employs on “Journey To Me” do a great job of introducing her listeners to the kind of challenging moments that often accompany love. The album opens with the single “Liar,” dealing with the complexity that comes along with being in love with someone who has lost their sense of truth and integrity when it comes to their feelings. It closes out with “Secrets,” which deals with the confusion and heartache that can come with love that isn’t genuine. The emotions and topics on this album are complicated and they are real. No time is wasted on the superficial.

The mystery of how Charlotte Bash is able to delve so deeply into the toughest elements of relationships and love in a way that’s so pleasing to the ear has a lot to do with her unique voice. She conveys the frustration and anger that comes with ending a broken relationship when you know that “Only Love Is Real,” pulling up big, powerful notes to accent otherwise even and measured singing. The velvety sexiness she infuses her voice with in the opening lines of “Now That I’m In Love” help to define the seductiveness of carefree solitude before the enrapturing chaos of discovering new love.

In the same breath, it is difficult to fully credit the beauty of this EP without recognizing the brilliance of its production. Darryl Swann’s collaboration with Charlotte Bash on making this project is felt without a doubt. “Halloween,” a song dealing with the frightening aspect of wearing figurative masks in a relationship, spills gently through the speaker, with a crisp clarity that does justice to the inherent energy of the song. The drums and acoustic guitar share the room with Charlotte comfortably on “Train”. Drums, upright bass and cello balance nicely with ethereal effects making the song feel personal.

Bash has successfully crafted music from the heart. The songs on Journey to Me are sure to resonate with real people experiencing real relationships with all their twists and turns. I strongly recommend listening to this album.
