“Chasing Shadows” by Moving Towers is a record that is able to achieve so much more than mere lyrical symmetry. The song explores disillusionment with mismanaged hopes. It deals with the pain inherent within a vacuous experience. It’s about not being able to let go of what one knows is bad for them. And it’s all been neatly packaged within an indie rock record with energy and style.

The composition and production of “Chasing Shadows” is its strongest suit. Credits for both have been given to Marcel du Preez. He is able to maintain a high energy with swelling guitar riffs and an impressively dynamic bass range. This allows the lyrics, which stray into the darker territory of emptiness and disillusionment, to find a sense of balance that makes the track far more listenable.

The lyrics however hold their own intriguing quality. The plays on words in the first and last verse on “Chasing Shadows” are poignant. The subtle shift from an internal to external perspective serves to illustrate the notion of entering and leaving a relationship. It allows the listener to track the evolution of feeling from its inception to its conclusion by changing just a few words. The skill that Moving Shadows displays here makes me wonder what other musical gems they have hidden up their sleeves.
