I remember reviewing “I’m So High” by DTox Dtreeman a while back and thinking it was one of the most original songs on the subject of smoking pot that I had heard in quite a while. Now that I’ve gotten a chance to check out the song’s trippy new music video, I can say that Dtox has successfully added a whole new layer to the exploration of the song’s concept while staying true to the core voice of the record itself.
The video makes frequent use of a semi-blurred background and often adds in a smoky overlay effect making it clear that rapper is plans to “stay high” throughout the experience. Dtox’s noticeably squinted eyes are another easy giveaway. Dtox walks as though in a haze at times throughout this day-in-the-life music video but he never stumbles. As the song brings out and the opening shot of the video connotes, Dtox walks the line competently if not gracefully between a kind of absence from the real world and constant habitation in a his own psychedelic wonderland. It’s a lot of fun to watch.
What interested me even more were the small gestures incorporated into the film that brought the high experience of DTox sole experience and, for brief moments, made those experiences ours. Seeing Dtox cut from, say, walking into a convenience store to hanging upside down make for some pretty heady visuals. Shots of Dtox walking away from his car over time are blended, creating a traveling-without-moving sort of effect (shout out to Jamiroquai!). That’s just a few of the fun highlights of the video. If you already enjoy Dtox’s audio recording of “I’m so High”, or if you just need some cool visuals for your next sesh, I definitely recommend checking out this music video.
