I was one of those kids who used to swirl the peas around in the mashed potatoes whenever I found them on my dinner plate. I can’t really say why. It just tasted better that way, so that’s the way I ate it. With a little gravy on top, it was perfect. DJ Vik’s new mashup record, “Don’t Worry In The Air”, proves that my logic wasn’t too far off. Here, Dj Vik has been able to unleash some very tangible synergy between two well-established songs to produce a fresh interpretation of the better qualities of both.
For starters, the anatomy of the record plays a hefty role in its quality as a good track in its own right. The recipe is straightforward. Jared Leto’s angsty vocals and the 30 seconds to Mars song “Up In The Air” overlay instrumentation from the popular Swedish House Mafia’s anthem, “Don’t You Worry Child”. Both songs are upbeat for the most part but SHM have the decidedly more energetic feel to them. DJ Vik manages to strategically infuse her “Don’t Worry In The Air” with all that thump, enhancing the desperation in Jared Leto’s voice and further emphasizing the strength of his lyrics.
DJ Vik makes certain not to neglect the contribution that “Up In The Air” makes to this alchemy of sound. The more rock-inspired synth guitar and drums are put to good use on “Don’t Worry In the Air”. They serve to add mobility to what is otherwise a relatively stagnant plodding club beat on “Don’t You Worry Child”. What we end up with is the best of worlds here, two songs with a natural fit to one another that DJ Vik was wise enough to recognize and build something awesome from.
I think the “Don’t You Worry Child” remixes are done often enough that its refreshing to see someone go after another set of lyrics as the pervading presence on the track. I look forward to seeing what she can do with two tracks that are entirely unknown. In the meantime, “Don’t Worry In The Air” is great track to listen to. I’m adding it to my “ignoring people on the subway” playlist as we speak. I Like it.
