(Review) Matthew Schultz ft. Alessia Guarnera – Crazy Heart

Matthew Schultz and Alessia Guarnera have come together to create the new single “Crazy Heart”. It’s at once emotional and tortured, colloquial and ethereal. In short, it’s a song that’s complex enough to definitely be worth checking out. Both artists bring something very different to the table and complement one another well. Alessia offers a Joplin-esque spirit to this record dealing with the confused world of being in love. Matt Schultz contrasts her with his contribution of the more rugged ladies man lyrical style, attempting to prove his love to his counterpart without breaking her heart.

Alessia’s is the first voice heard on the track, inherently musical but infused with a carefully designed weathered tone. Her lyrics speak of being in love with a partner with a “Crazy Heart” and the pain that love forces her to endure. Meanwhile, a melancholy but soulful coffeehouse guitar keeps time, until a finger-snap backing beat arrives to fully realize the overall sound.  One of the coolest things about the song that grows from this opening is that Schultz’s autotune and sub bass somehow don’t manage to overpower Guarnera’s unplugged groove. They stand up to each other like a nice steak and a fine wine. The image of these musicians in the character of star-crossed lovers becomes palpable, which is, of course, a lot of fun to listen to.

“Crazy Heart” fits very comfortably in the category of contemporary R&B, but somehow the synergy between this pair of voices turns it into something more. I can definitely see myself grooving to this track at a lounge or just letting it play around the house on a mellow night in. Alessia Guarnera and Matthew Schultz have put together a worthwhile track here. It’s definitely encouraged me to explore both of their catalogues individually as a result.
